Edit & approve your TOC

When TOC approval is enabled, you can edit the generated TOC before the book is written.

What you can edit

Youbooks allows you to edit:

  • chapter titles,
  • sections/subsections (within limits),
  • the number of chapters/sections (within limits).

Each project has its own constraints based on your word count and other settings.

What you can’t do

Youbooks can’t support every extreme structure request.

Examples of “not possible”:

  • 100 chapters in a very short book
  • 1 chapter for a very long book
  • arbitrary unlimited chapters/sections/subsections

The workflow needs consistent structural assumptions to produce coherent books.

Best way to influence the TOC

Put your preferred TOC in your book prompt.

Youbooks won’t follow it perfectly, but it strongly nudges the structure in the right direction.

After approval

Once you approve the TOC:

  • the project continues,
  • you can’t change the TOC again,
  • you can’t cancel the project.

Using AI to edit your TOC

You can export your TOC as JSON or XML, upload the file to another AI (ChatGpt, Claude) and ask it to edit the JSON as you wish. JSON is simply a structure file that includes your TOC so that a machine can read it and understand the actual structure. You can then export and save that JSON back to your computer and import it into youbooks. The JSON will still need to pass our validation critera. This is a quick way to modify your TOC using another AI interface.
